Fiction: Two ChatGPT Stories Using the Same Prompt
Using
the objective point of view, write a short story about an old man administering
palliative care to an old dying woman.
The old man shuffled slowly down the hallway
of the nursing home, his hands trembling slightly as he pushed the wheelchair.
He had been here for weeks now, ever since the old woman had been admitted.
She had been in the
hospital for months, but the doctors had said there was nothing more they could
do for her. Now she was here, in the nursing home, and the old man had been
coming to visit her every day.
He had known her for years,
ever since they were both young. They had grown up together, and he had always
been fond of her. Now, as he looked at her frail body, he could feel his heart
breaking. He knew that she was dying, and he wanted to do whatever he could to
make her last days as comfortable as possible.
He wheeled her into her
room and gently helped her into bed. He sat beside her and held her hand,
talking to her softly. He told her stories of their childhood, of the good times
they had shared. He told her how much he loved her, and how much he would miss
her when she was gone.
The old man stayed with her
until late into the night, and when it was time for him to go, he kissed her
forehead and said goodbye. He knew that she wouldn't be here much longer, but he
wanted to make sure that she was as comfortable as possible.
He had been administering palliative
care to her, and he was determined to make her last days as peaceful and pain-free
as possible. The old man left the nursing home that night, his heart heavy with
sadness.
He knew that he would never
see her again, but he was glad that he had been able to spend her last days with
her. He had done his best to make her comfortable, and he hoped that she had
found some peace in her final days.
Story #2
The old man sat by the bedside of the old
woman, watching her frail body slowly slipping away. He had been her caretaker
for many years, and he had grown to love her like a mother. He had seen her
through her happiest and most difficult times, and now he was here to help her
through her last. The old man held her hand and spoke softly to her, telling her
stories of their time together and of the life she had lived. He reminded her of
the joys and sorrows she had experienced, and of the love she had shared with
those around her. He told her of the beauty of life, and of the importance of
living it to the fullest. The old man administered palliative care to the old
woman, ensuring that she was comfortable and free from pain. He made sure that
she was surrounded by her loved ones, and that she was able to spend her last
days in peace. He also made sure that she was able to say goodbye to those she
loved, and that her last wishes were respected. The old man stayed with the old
woman until her last breath, and he was there to witness her passing. He was
filled with sadness, but also with a sense of peace knowing that she was now at
rest. He had done all he could to make her last days as comfortable and peaceful
as possible, and he was grateful for the time he had been able to spend with her.

Note: A piece of Story #2 acted as a
springboard for Cross My Heart, an original short story that I needed to write for a Flash Fiction
workshop: “He reminded her of the joys and sorrows she had experienced, and of
the love she had shared with those around her. He told her of the beauty of life,
and of the importance of living it to the fullest.”
ChatGPT-generated text can help writers get
past writer’s block, but it should not be a replacement for original stories
written by human beings. As you can see, the computer-generated text lacks the
human touch.
Also, the Chat did not understand the
command that asked for the Objective Point of View, but I expect the technology
to evolve to become more sophisticated.
These stories were generated in February 2023.
